Manny Ramirez ended nearly four months of speculation Wednesday, agreeing to a two-year, $45 million deal with the Dodgers.
The deal has Los Angeles fans heaving a sigh of relief at the return of the superstar who helped lead the team to last year's NL West title, hitting .396 with 17 home runs and 53 RBI in 53 games after being traded from the Red Sox. But while the Dodgers enjoy his production and Ramirez enjoys his riches, George Washington High School in Washington Heights, the school where Ramirez once starred, spent the offseason working to raise funds for this season.
"We're struggling this year," said GW coach Steve Mandl, who guided the Trojans to last year's PSAL title and coached Ramirez more than decade ago. "We had to buy new uniforms and we bought rings."
The PSAL provides teams with little equipment money, forcing most squads to rely on fund-raising efforts for even basic items such as bats and balls. Add in the cost of uniforms, and high school baseball isn't cheap.
Ramirez, 36, knows, but he's never helped GW or the Youth Service League in Brooklyn where he honed his picture-perfect stroke. Mandl says he would never ask for money, but a little wouldn't hurt. "It would be really nice," Mandl said. "We're really struggling this year. I can't tell him to buy a Mercedes, I can't tell him to buy a new house. He does what he wants with it."
Compared to Ramirez's gargantuan contract, any donation would be small. According to reports, the first year of Ramirez's deal is worth $25 million. He can opt out of next season, which is worth $20 million. The entire contract will be paid out over five years: $10 million in each of the first four years and $5 million in the final year.
